The Metro station and suburban railway is across the road, opposite Arrivals. The ticket office is about 200 metres (with rolling walkways) from the entrance.

The Metro is modern, quiet and clean with clear route maps and on-board announcements (in Greek and English) for all stops.

The airport to central Athens takes about 40 minutes and Piraeus about 55. (Metro line 3 (Blue) from the airport - change to line 1 (Green) at Monastiraki - see Metro map).

The one-way fare is €8:00 with some concessions (incl. 65+ and some students).

Travel on the suburban railway to central Athens and Piraeus needs a change to the metro after only five stops.

During construction of the Metro there were many archaeological finds. Various items are displayed at six stations.

Athens is also served by buses, trams and trolley buses operated by Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA).

The stops for Express buses to central Athens and the ferry at Piraeus are  immediately outside the exit from Arrivals.  Average journey time is about 70 minutes to Syntagma Square (central) - route X95 and 90 minutes to Pireaus (ferry port) - route X96. The fare to Karaiskaki Square (outside port gate 8) is €3.20 and includes transfer to any other Athens public transport. At the airport buy tickets from the bus driver.

IMPORTANT: You must validate your ticket before travelling on the Metro, using date/timestamp machines at platform entrances. There are frequent checks and those without tickets or non-validated tickets are subject to a maximum fine of 60 (yes, sixty) times the standard full fare (with no reduction for concessionary fares) e.g. passengers travelling from the airport to central Athens without a validated ticked could be fined €480.

If travelling with a concessionary ticket you will be required to prove entitlement.

The same principles apply to all public transport in Athens.

ATHENS TRANSPORT

AIRPORT TO CENTRAL ATHENS and FERRIES

METRO and SUBURBAN RAILWAY
Tip
EXPRESS BUS

Athens taxis are relatively cheap. The taxi rank is by Exit 3 of the arrivals area. The indicative fares table will vary slightly according to traffic conditions, amount and weight of luggage but it is a guide. Note that fares are increased between midnight and 05:00.

Check that the correct taxi tariff is shown on the meter (Day rate 1; Night rate 2).  Don't try to negotiate a flat, fixed fare - you'll almost certainly pay too much.

Tip Athens Transport

City buses serving central Athens are cheap and frequent. Tickets cannot usually be purchased on board but can bought from official booths and other outlets, including many kiosks.
