CreteForYou.com
Dedicated to travel between the UK and Crete
Back to top
The web site is a personal one, started in 2004.
After several holidays here we bought a house in Crete in 1998, took early retirement in 2002, sold up in England and came to live here. A couple of years later we built a holiday apartment alongside our house.
We wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to say, “Let’s rent that apartment,” which meant we’d need to provide plenty of information “up front”. The result was that we decided to provide details, not just of the apartment, but of how potential visitors could get to Crete and to our apartment in particular. The easiest, quickest and cheapest way to provide details was through a web site - or so we thought until we started to build one.
The mechanics of creating the site were straightforward thanks to a marvellous program for creating web sites called WebPlus*. The problem turned out to be the time taken researching the airline information and other similar stuff but we got there eventually.
Three years later we decided to sell the property so pulled out of the rental market. However, so much work had gone into the site, updating each year, adding bits etc., that we decided to continue with it - we couldn’t just throw it all away.
This year was to be the last but, in the end, we couldn’t forget the time and effort we’d put in so here we are again.
* We had no knowledge of HTML, the programming language needed to build a web site, but WebPlus does all that; we just design the pages like a printed leaflet and the program does the “techie” stuff.
BACKGROUND
All the information on the site is provided free to users, with the intention of providing helpful information to help people wanting to travel between the UK and Crete, not just by air but by road and sea and rail and sea.
We do not take paid advertising so we can be impartial with no reason to favour one company over others. However, we do have some costs. We must pay to keep the domain name “creteforyou.com” and for the web space for the site. The cost of these is just about covered by affiliate schemes (a marketing method used by some companies). If you use one of the links on this site to go to a company site where you make a purchase we earn a small commission*. You pay exactly the same whether you go directly to a company site or via this one.
Not all companies have affiliate schemes and many of those that do have been reducing commission levels during the economic crisis so, to keep going, we may start to carry some Google ads.
* In most cases “small” means about 1% say, £10 on a £1000 ticket purchase (some companies pay a flat fee of £2.50). We almost break even.
FUNDING THE SITE
Please feel free to comment on the site, whether favourable or critical. Our objective is to provide useful information on a site where it is easy to find your way around. If you find shortcomings please tell us and we’ll fix what we can.
If there’s anything you think could be usefully added to the site let us know and we’ll see if it can be included.
Thanks for spending time on the site.
P.S. Almost forgot to mention if you buy WebPlus you’ll get 18 months free web hosting, a web address and e-mail.
Unfortunately, we’re beyond the free time but that’s plenty to discover if you want to carry on with your personal site.
We’re relative beginners at building web sites, not very good with technical stuff to do with computers and are certainly not programmers.
To produce this site we used a great little program called WebPlus.
No programming, no knowledge of HTML and all together not much more difficult than using a word processor. Mind you, we probably haven’t used as much as 10% of what the program is capable of.
If we can produce a web site anyone can.
Having your own site is a great way to share pictures and news with family and friends (and if you want to keep it private from the rest of the world it’s easy to protect your pages with a password so only those you invite get to see).
All made possible by Serif’s WebPlus.
