“OPTIONAL EXTRA” CHARGES

In UK law, airlines are required to include non-optional items, e. g. taxes and airport charges, in “headline” ticket prices. To keep the “headline” price as low as possible many costs that were previously bundled together to show an “all-in” price are now shown as optional extras by most airlines. For example, in-flight meals, hold baggage etc., are now separately priced.  This can make it more difficult to compare prices but, for example, you are no longer presented with a meal that’s included in the fare whether you want it or not. If you carry only hand baggage you no longer pay for adding to the payload with suitcases.

The table below shows costs not included in the “headline” / advertised ticket price per person, economy return. Prices are those applicable when booking. Most airlines allow the options to be added later but usually the cost is at least 50% higher if done on-line and 100% higher through a call centre**.

Unless otherwise stated card charges apply to the total cost.

** Most call centres have premium rate telephone numbers where charges are a minimum 10p/min, sometimes more, from a BT land line and other suppliers and mobile networks may charge more.

All information in the table above has been extracted from company websites and may be subject to change if companies amend their regulations or Term and Conditions. We cannot accept any responsibility for changes that may be made and will not be held liable for any losses that may be incurred through reliance on this web site.  We strongly advise that if you have any queries regarding your flight you contact the airline directly.

Make absolutely sure that your cabin bag, when packed, is within your airline’s weight and size limits. If it doesn’t fit their measuring rack, without being forced, you are likely to be faced with removing some of the contents and repacking them in a hold bag, having it put in the hold or leaving it behind. Having it put in the hold can cost double what you paid on-line for hold baggage, leaving it behind is probably not an option and if the bag contains valuable items (cameras etc.) where will you carry those.

Most airlines allow moderately large bags (see above) but Thomas Cook’s limit is little more than a large lap top bag.

Tip

ESSENTIALS 4 TRAVEL offer a choice of more than 180 cases, holdalls, bags and backpacks designed to be taken aboard as cabin baggage. Prices range from around £30 to several hundreds so there’s something for everyone.

As we like walking, beaches and photography a bag that particularly appeals to us, is small enough to be cabin baggage on most airlines, has wheels for smooth surfaces like airport terminals and can be carried as a back pack full of beach and photo gear.

The Antler Urbanite Trolley Backpack is tough, too, and comes with a seven year guarantee.

Ryanair baggage fees are too complicated to include in the table.
