TICKET ADD-ON COSTS

In UK law, airlines are required to include non-optional items, e. g. taxes and airport charges, in “headline” ticket prices. To keep this “headline” price as low as possible many airlines have made many items previously included optional. For example, in-flight meals, hold baggage and even method of payment are options to be added at additional cost.

The table below shows costs not included in the “headline” / advertised ticket price per person, economy return. Prices are those applicable when first booking on-line. Most airlines allow any of the options to be added later but typically the cost is 50% higher if done on-line and 100% higher through a call centre**.

Unless otherwise stated card charges apply to the total cost.

Thomson and Thomas Cook include A.T.O.L. in their base price since, as tour operators, they are obliged to give this protection.

** Most call centres have premium rate telephone numbers where charges are a minimum 10p/min from a BT land line and other suppliers and mobile networks may charge more.

It is a condition of travel with most airlines that you must have their insurance policy or a better one. This extract from one company’s Terms and Conditions is typical.
“When you book travel arrangements with us, you must take out the travel insurance we offer or another policy that offers the same or greater protection.“

All the charter and low-cost airlines offer travel insurance as an option but we have not included it in the table as it is much cheaper to buy direct from a provider.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

Regardless of airlines’ conditions, travel insurance is essential. For just a few pounds, as well as giving peace of mind, it could save you thousands.

Arrange a policy as soon as you book your holiday or flights. You will then be covered if you need to cancel or delay your arrangements for reasons beyond your control, e.g. ill health or the death of one of your party [or a close relative].

Illness or accident while on holiday can mean large medical bills. EU countries do have reciprocal arrangements for medical care but this will cover only emergency treatment. [Remember to ensure each of your party has their own E.H.I.C.*] Other associated expenses or the cost of any special arrangements that may be needed to return home cannot be claimed.

You will be covered for loss or theft of baggage, valuables, Passports, money, etc., and can add options like legal expenses cover.

We believe Flexicover, who have specialised in travel insurance for more than twenty five years offer excellent cover at a very competitive price. You can check them out here

Buy your travel insurance direct from a specialist company or broker rather than a travel company or airline. You could save about 50% and have better cover.

If you travel more than once a year we recommend that you arrange annual, multi-trip insurance which, typically, might cost only a couple of pounds more than an airline’s single trip policy.

Tip

Many policies limit the amount they will pay per item for jewellery and things like expensive cameras or laptops, sometimes as little as £200 or £300. If a travel policy you are considering is one of these it’s worth checking with your household contents insurance company to see if your policy covers such items. In some cases travel insurance can be added to a household policy for a small extra premium.
